Why does your pet dog sleep at your feet?
Certainly there are reasons why dogs are dubbed as man’s best friends. Since domestication, dogs have become affectionate and compassionate friends of man. A dog owner will know that the pet will always be there…always ready to be of help to the human friends. Dogs are one of the most loved pets and dog owners make sure that the pet is not only provided with enough food but also with all the things that will make its life comfortable. You know that whatever care you gave the pet will be returned many times over.
Dogs have consistently proven their loyalty and affection to their human friends. You are probably aware that the pet will withstand any discomfort just to be near you. Look how your dog would grab any chance to sleep at your feet. Dogs have a reputation of being good sleepers. Notice how your dog would grab any chance to have a shut eye. People that love to sleep would invest on big, soft and comfortable beds. Dogs love to sleep but they are not very choosy where they would bed down. In spite of the comfortable beds, dogs would still prefer to sleep at the master’s feet even if it means that the sleep will be disrupted every time the master moves.
The desire of the pet to be with you is expected as dogs are very affectionate animals. It is somehow fitting to give dogs the name Velcro pets given their inclination to stick close to their masters. You have probably noticed your pet’s rather funny habit of leaning on your legs and of stealthily creeping to gain a place in your lap.
The master’s feet would not be a very comfortable place to sleep on. However, if it means being close to the beloved master, a dog would endure the cricks on the neck and the cramped muscles. Dogs are very protective of its people and the habit of sleeping on the master’s feet can be the dog’s way of ensuring that the master will always be protected. This habit can also mean that the dog is being submissive. Being pack oriented, dogs would need to have a well defined hierarchy. A dog that sleeps at the feet of the master is recognizing the leader of the pack.
Discounting the discomfort the dog owner will feel, this habit is not really dangerous for both the master and the pet. Dog owners love the pet thus it will be allowed to sleep undisturbed but what if the pet is a giant breed, which one would you choose – a sleeping dog or a sleeping and cramping feet?
