Gee, my dog is licking my face again. Make no mistake about the fact that this four legged and furry baby is loved but the raspy tongue and the revolting drool on my face is really disgusting. Licking is a normal behavior of dogs but with the way my pet is licking me every time it gets the chance, this pooch is probably the world’s greatest licker.
The habit to lick was learned by dogs from puppyhood. Dams lick their puppies clean. The puppies will be licked clean by the dam after they have pooped and peed. Licking is believed to aid in the digestive and circulation processes of the puppies. Puppies on the other hand, have learned to lick the mother dog whenever they want to nurse. Puppies that are about to be weaned would lick the lips of the dam as an encouragement to regurgitate food. Needless to say, licking is also done to show affection. You would wonder at the maternal instinct that makes mother dogs lick puppies that have crawled away from the mother’s warmth. Being affectionate creatures, puppies would lick not only the mother dog but also the littermates.
It is perfectly normal for dogs to show affection through licking. Because of the affectionate nature, dogs are considered as members of the family. The mother dog and the littermates that were once the recipient of the dog’s wet tongue are now replaced by the human family. This is one of the reasons why your pet licks you. It will be noted that dogs that do not receive the same care and affection from their owners would not have the inclination to lick their owners.
You know that your pet is a pack oriented animal. You may have made your dog understand that you are the alpha male – the leader of the pack. The dog will lick you as a sign of submission. Licking can also be the dog’s way of gaining your approval or attention. Dogs in a household with more pets often manifest the need to secure the affection of the master. Licking can be the strategy of one dog wanting to get an edge over the other pet for the master’s affection.
The dog’s tendency to lick can be annoying to some pet owners considering the fact that these pets have the propensity to eat feces and things abhorrent to humans. Dogs also have an unaccountable fondness for the water in toilet bowls. Because of these habits, the pet would not think you do not value its affection by trying to curb its licking behavior.
