What to do to a dog that has eaten chocolates

Your girlfriend is a dog lover so to make up for having stood her up you bought a dog from the breeder. In a basket prettied up with ribbons, the dog, the $120/pound chocolate and a bouquet of flowers waited in the car. Dogs and chocolates is certainly a bad combination. The dog has eaten every bit of the chocolates! Would you ignore the pet and rush to get another chocolate or would you take the dog to the vet?

People love chocolate thus this comfort food is always seen in most households. It is therefore not uncommon for dogs to ingest this natural poison. Many pet owners are not aware that chocolates can poison the dog thus every time the family eats chocolate bars or Black Forest Cake, a bite will be tossed to the pet. Dogs are not only well loved pets, they are also considered as members of the family thus the dog will have a taste of the human family’s food. Some human foods though can have dangerous effects on the pet.

Humans can eat as much chocolate as they want. Chocolate eating will have no dangerous effect in humans. Chocolate contains theobromine, a substance that has no dangerous effect on humans but can be deadly if ingested by dogs. Theobromine is a stimulant that is not unlike caffeine thus the central nervous and the cardio vascular systems of a dog that has eaten large quantities of chocolates will be severely affected. The dog will have seizures and if no immediate treatment is administered, the pet can die from arrhythmia.

Chocolate toxicity is dose dependent. Dog owners that are completely unaware of the toxic effect of chocolates on the pet will continue sharing with the dog the candy bar and the chocolate chip cookies. Chocolates are kind of addicting thus the dog would develop a craving for this comfort food for humans. The owner will realize that chocolates is poisonous if the pet has started to vomit and have diarrhea.

The dog will manifest a hyperactive behavior. The poisoned dog would have to be taken to the vet but first aid treatments would help save the life of the dog. Administer activated charcoal to the poisoned dog. This is done to prevent the poison from being absorbed by the bloodstream. A hydrogen peroxide and water solution can be administered as well to induce vomiting.
